What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Also called: GEO, AEO, answer engine optimization, AI SEO

Generative engine optimization is the practice of making a product or page likely to be cited or recommended in answers written by AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews.

Assistants answer from two places: what they learned in training, and what they find by searching the web when asked. Both favour products that are described the same way in many independent places.

The practical work overlaps with SEO: clear pages that state what the product is, listings on directories and launch platforms, mentions in communities, and pages that crawlers are allowed to read.

Why it matters for a launch

People increasingly ask an assistant "what is a good tool for X" instead of searching. Being listed and described consistently across the web is how a small product gets into that answer.
